What this means for people

More accounts means more electricity bills left unpaid for more than 91 days, with no plan to repay.

Suppliers in Great Britain report domestic electricity accounts. An account is counted when a bill has stayed unpaid for more than 91 days and nothing has been agreed for paying it back. Energy used after that is left out of the total.

How to read this

Accounts, not households

One home can have an electricity account and a gas account. Each account is counted on its own.

Unpaid for more than 91 days

A bill unpaid for more than 91 days, with no arrangement to repay, is included. Later energy use is left out.

Great Britain

England, Scotland and Wales are included. Northern Ireland has its own energy market.

Accounts, not pounds

The figure counts accounts. A higher price cap can raise the pounds owed without adding accounts.

Not seasonally adjusted

Winter and summer can differ, because this count is not adjusted for the time of year.
